In 1909, the founder and devoted follower of Fauvism, Henri Matisse painted one of his best paintings. “Still Life with a Blue Tablecloth” - an original, finished, harmonious panel.
The composition of the still life does not differ in subject variety. A colorful fabric descends from a wall onto a horizontal hard surface. The pattern is recognizable from other paintings by Matisse. But as an adherent of Fauvism, he does not forget to radically change the palette. Here, the tablecloth is azure with saturated calm stains of blue color. The multidimensionality of space is poorly marked, allowing emphasis on the overall impression of the transmitted emotions of the painter.
There are three small objects on the table: a shining transparent decanter of bright bottle color; very close - a glass white vase filled with ripe fruit; a little further - a large brown coffee pot. The artist’s emotional attachment to the depicted simple objects is felt. The shown patterned tablecloth is considered his favorite, and the dishes delight us with figured beauty and reflections of light. An original departure from classical painting is the lack of objects in the shadow.
Vivid contrasts, amazingly rich colors, rhythmic oriental fabric ornament - all this is designed to awaken the viewer a sense of richness of life. In difficult times, when the painter had to create, society especially needed new joy, hope and relaxation from everything dark, oppressive, frightening. Matisse's still lifes turned out to be such saving means.
"Still life with a blue tablecloth" gives a state of serene contemplation, children's lightness and purity of perception. The unpretentious pattern of a bluish tablecloth, funny, energetic, fuzzy, attracts the attention of the viewer and seems to remind that life is just a game - colorful and joyful.
