Venetsianov is a Russian artist from a poor family originating from Greece. His very name came from the nickname "Venetiano", which was worn by his great-grandfather, who came to Russia. Born in Moscow, worked at the forest department, was distinguished by great observation and attention to detail.

He preferred to write genre scenes from the life of peasants, took students - one of them, Soroka, was a serf and enjoyed Venetsianov great love. Unfortunately, he did not become famous and did not even receive freedom - during peasant riots he was thrown into prison, where he committed suicide.

“Portrait of a Mother” is the first known painting by Venetsianov, which brought him celebrity. It was written in a lyrical realistic style, due at the same time to the principles of Venetsianov - “You need to write true, as it is in reality” and his attitude to his mother, which adds sentimentality. The old woman in the picture looks good.

On gray hair, a curled wig adorned with a beige puffy bow. A scarlet blouse is tied to the chest, a light shawl is thrown over it. Her hands are folded under her chest, in her right hand she holds a folded fan. Her face expresses concentration, she looks a little to the side, as if a little embarrassed.

It is easy to imagine how the son-artist asked her to pose, and she, considering this a very important matter, preened herself and tried to remain motionless. There are practically no wrinkles on her face - only nasolabial folds are indicated by age, a slight blush on her cheeks. The situation itself is unusual to her, constrains her and at the same time flatters her.

In the way it is depicted, one feels craftsmanship and at the same time love, which gives the picture a special charm. The portrait of a stranger will never be so vibrant and tender. “Portrait of a mother” is like gratitude to all mothers.
