An art critic, art historian, restorer, teacher, architect, artist and all about one comprehensively developed man, Igor Grabar, who, due to his titanic work in the cultural field, could not but go down in history, he considered a change of one type of activity to another a vacation.

In addition, Grabar traveled a lot and everywhere, while learning something, after returning home in 1900, he began a “creative period”, after a long absence he falls in love with Russian nature again. Grabar, inspired by this love, begins to work intensively as an artist, he creates many works that are characteristic of the Russian village.

The painting "Apples", as well as possible, describes the artist's reverent attitude to the Russian nature of its primitiveness. The painting depicts a rustic table on which are plates typical of a village jugs, and apples, mostly yellow, are scattered about the table carelessly.

The work “Apples” is a still life written in the style of impressionism, since it was the artists of this movement that inspired the author to paint after he saw their paintings in European galleries. But Grabar does not blindly follow all the ideas of impressionism, he is trying to make a domestic contribution, to show impressionism in Russian.

And it should be recognized that the attempts to "Russify" impressionism were not unsuccessful, because when you look at the image, you remember the always open, comfortable grandfather's house, a colorful summer garden, where various alluring smells of nature hover.

The Russian audience, not only sees a beautiful picture, he immediately understands that it was written by a person who loves Russian nature and knows the Russian soul from the inside. It seems that the canvas conveys even the sweet smell of apples that taste like a carefree childhood.
