Norwegian painter played a large role in German expressionism. In his art, he tried to explain life and its meaning. His subtle visions of the soul and man can only be understood intuitively.

The picture of Munch depicts men and women. Some couples merged in a dance. Along the edges of the picture are lonely women. On the left is a woman in a white dress dancing. Her eyes are down. She is probably sad that she is without a couple at this ball. It symbolizes innocence, purity and integrity.

On the left is a woman in a black dress. Her hands are braided and lowered. The look is empty and a little frightening.

In the foreground, a dancing couple of a man and a woman stands out clearly. Outlines of people are more visible than any traced details. It is noticeable that the girl put one hand on the shoulder of a young man, and she holds the partner's hand with the other. They dance, snugly pressed together. The man, most likely, is in a classic black suit, and the girl has a bright red dress on the floor. Usually it symbolizes beauty and love. Their dance feels complete dedication, openness and lightness.

There are several interpretations of this picture. The picture describes the various conditions of a woman. On the left is innocence and simplicity in the form of a woman in white. Then a young and youthful period, where a girl coquettishly dances with a partner. On the right is maturity, already devoid of any hope.

According to another version, the emphasis is on dancing couples. The pair on the left is youth, i.e. they just entered adulthood. There are no obligations to them, they just feel good being with each other. In the center is a mature couple. Their dance is full of leisureliness and solidity. They are already capable of emotional and intellectual support of each other and soberly evaluate themselves and their partners. An elderly couple is located on the right. They are no longer so active, but wise by experience. These three pairs show the past, present, and future.
