Description of the painting by Boris Kustodiev "Merchant at tea"

The painting "The Merchant's Cup of Tea" embodies the originality of the creative method of the artist Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev. The very image of a merchant - a burly beautiful Russian woman with a round face and a healthy smile, according to art critics, is a favorite of the artist.

In the picture of the merchant under consideration, we depicted drinking tea at a large table from a saucer. On the table are a samovar and dishes with a variety of dishes (especially clearly the artist writes out images of fruits, grapes, watermelon, apples). On the table there are also a lot of beautiful and expensive dishes and traditional Russian food: pies, white bread, jam. In the background are scenes from the life of the old merchant Moscow: a white-stone church, shopping arcades, a grove and monastery buildings.

The merchant herself is young and beautiful, she has a pleasant full face, a scarf covering her hair, tied with the ends forward, large gold earrings encircled with red lipstick. The artist neatly writes her white neck and shoulders, as well as a nice dark blue dress with a small brooch in the form of jewelry.

There is a certain irony in this picture, the artist, as it were, allows the viewer to smile maliciously upon seeing the full and kind merchant woman and her feast. However, the irony here is soft, not causing any negative feelings.

It would seem that in this ordinary household sketch there is nothing mysterious, but this is not so. The image of the merchant woman is deeply symbolic, because the artist painted this picture in the turning point for the history of our country in 1918, when some thought that Russia had died and would never be reborn.

And the Russian merchant with an established life, an abundance of food, a big cat, bent his back in anticipation of affection, a simple measured life seemed to the author an image of the future of the country, which, having survived all the anxieties, would return to the traditional order of being.
